Exploring Spectre's Crater and the Hidden Treasures of Todra Gorge
The ninth day of the Morocco Desert Raid 25 brought a mix of adventure, history, and breathtaking landscapes. Leaving the vast Sahara behind, the journey unfolded along a newly surfaced desert road, leading north through the town of Rissini. This day was marked by a unique detour to a famous crater rock formation, a cinematic landmark from the James Bond film Spectre, and a ride through the stunning Todra Gorge, a place where nature’s grandeur meets the thrill of the road. For motorbike and motorcycle enthusiasts, this route offered a rare blend of off-road challenge and scenic beauty rarely found on typical Morocco tours.

Leaving the Sahara and Heading North
The day started on a desert road freshly surfaced with barrels of surface dressing, stretching about 3 kilometers. This smooth stretch was a welcome change after the rougher terrain of the Saharan track to our camp. The road led through Rissini, a small town that serves as a gateway to the northern regions. The fresh surface made for a comfortable ride, but the real excitement was yet to come.
Discovering the Spectre Crater
While staying in Chefchaouen, an English couple shared a tip about a crater rock formation used as the villain’s lair in Spectre. This unexpected piece of movie trivia sparked curiosity and set the stage for a short off-road detour. The ride to the crater was bumpy and challenging, but the payoff was worth every jolt.
The crater is a massive rock formation surrounded by an old stone wall, giving it a mysterious and ancient feel. It’s not just a Bond film location; it also appeared in The Mummy. This spot offers a unique photo opportunity and a chance to experience a piece of cinematic history in the middle of Morocco’s rugged landscape. Unfortunately, it's origin is even more sinister than Spectre. It was originally a Portuguese slave prison camp before shipping sub-Saharan slaves off to the Americas.
Riding Through Todra Gorge
Back on the main road, the journey continued toward Todra Gorge, a narrow canyon carved by a small river. This gorge is a popular destination for tourists, often visited by coach loads of travellers. The road winds through the gorge, with coaches turning around after passing through to return the same way.
The gorge’s narrow passage and the river running alongside create a dramatic setting. The road here is low and close to the water, offering an intimate experience with the natural surroundings. Beyond the gorge, the road opens up, revealing a huge dam and reservoir at the top.
High Altitude Adventure on the Plateau
After Todra Gorge, the route climbed to a plateau around 2000 meters above sea level. This section passed through small settlements and nomadic tents scattered in the middle of nowhere. Herds of goats grazed freely, and locals—men, women, and children—greeted the passing riders with smiles and waves.
This part of the tour is truly off the beaten track. Few tourists or motorcycle groups venture here due to the challenging road conditions. The sense of isolation and connection with local life adds a special dimension to the adventure.

Navigating Agoudal’s Rough Roads
The next challenge came in Agoudal, a busy little town with completely unmade roads. The rough terrain tested the skills of every motorbike rider. At around 2900 meters above sea level, the altitude affected the tyre pressure monitoring system, which falsely indicated low pressure on the front tire. This was a reminder of the unique challenges that come with riding in high-altitude desert environments.
Fun fact, 'Hello' in the Amazhigh dialect is 'Azul'. It's weird calling out 'Asshole' when pulling up to the locals. :-)
Descending the Dades Valley
From Agoudal, the route descended into the Dades Valley. The new road here is fantastic for motorbikes, featuring fast, wide sweeping turns. However, the lack of security barriers or walls means riders must stay alert. The road edges drop sharply into the valley below, leaving no room for mistakes.
Adding to the challenge, occasional stretches of pea shingle keep riders on their toes. This combination of speed, scenery, and risk makes the Dades Valley a thrilling part of the Morocco desert adventure.
Fuelling Up in Remote Areas
A practical tip for anyone touring this region: the only fuel available in these high-altitude areas often comes from open oil drums, decanted by hand. This unconventional fuel source requires caution and preparation. Always carry extra fuel and be ready for unexpected stops in remote locations.
We travelled through village after village without encountering any other foreigners until we reached the renowned Dades Gorge, known for its series of sharp switchbacks. However, it's hard to fully appreciate them while descending, as the corners block your view.
At the base, we found our hotel for the night, where we were greeted warmly, as if we were long-lost family. We enjoyed a delicious homemade dinner of chicken tagine.

Final Thoughts on Day 9
Day 9 of the Morocco Desert Raid 25 was a blend of cinematic history, natural beauty, and challenging riding. From the crater used in Spectre to the narrow Todra Gorge and the high mountain plateau, this day offered a rich variety of experiences. The route tested motorbike skills with rough roads, altitude effects, and fast descents, making it a memorable chapter in any desert adventure.
For riders seeking a Morocco tour that goes beyond the usual paths, this day’s journey shows the rewards of exploring less-traveled roads. The combination of culture, landscape, and riding challenge creates a unique story worth sharing and experiencing firsthand.
