The journey to Morocco began long before setting foot on African soil. After a 36-hour ferry crossing from Portsmouth, the adventure unfolded through the varied climates and landscapes of Spain. From the relentless rain in the north to the scorching heat of Andalusia, the first four days set the tone for a motorcycle touring experience unlike any other. This post shares the early stages of the Morocco Desert Raid 25, capturing the anticipation, challenges, and excitement of the ride.

Crossing Spain: From Rain to Sun
The saying goes that the rain in Spain falls mostly in the north, and this proved true on the first leg of the trip. After disembarking in northern Spain, the route took us through heavy, persistent rain. Riding a motorbike in such conditions tests both skill and patience. The roads became slick, visibility dropped, and every twist demanded full attention.
Despite the wet start, the journey through northern Spain offered a unique perspective on the country’s rugged beauty. The rain-soaked landscapes contrasted sharply with the dry, sun-baked scenes that awaited further south.
By the time we reached Andalusia, the weather had shifted dramatically. Temperatures soared to 31°C, and the roads dried quickly under the intense sun. This sudden change was a reminder of the diverse climates motorcycle touring can expose you to, even within a single country.
The Road to Africa
After an overnight stop in Mérida, the route continued southward. Mérida itself is a city rich in Roman history, but the focus was on the road ahead. The next day took us through Ronda, a town famous for its dramatic cliffs and winding roads. The motorbike handled the curves with ease, and the scenery was breathtaking.
The roads in this part of Spain are a motorcyclist’s dream. Smooth tarmac, sweeping bends, and minimal traffic make for an exhilarating ride. However, this was just a passage to the real destination: Africa.
The anticipation built as we approached Algeciras port. From the balcony overlooking the harbor, the Rock of Gibraltar stood as a silent sentinel, marking the gateway to a new continent. The ferry to Morocco was scheduled for early the next morning, promising the start of the desert raid.

Preparing for the Desert
Covering 1030 kilometers over two days was a test of endurance and planning. Motorcycle touring demands careful preparation, especially when transitioning from European roads to the challenging terrain of Morocco.
Key preparations included:
Checking tire pressure and tread suitable for mixed surfaces
Packing essential gear for both wet and hot conditions
Ensuring navigation tools were updated for remote areas
Reviewing safety protocols for desert riding
The transition from Spain’s varied climate to Morocco’s arid environment requires adaptability. Riders must be ready for sudden temperature changes and the physical demands of riding on uneven roads and potential gravel.
First Impressions of Morocco
Arriving in Morocco brings a rush of excitement. The culture, colors, and landscapes are strikingly different from Europe. The motorbike feels at home on the open roads, ready to tackle the desert ahead.
The early days of the Morocco Desert Raid 25 are about more than just distance covered. They are about immersing in the environment, adjusting to new challenges, and building momentum for the journey ahead.

Looking Ahead
The first four days have laid a solid foundation for the Morocco Desert Raid. From the ferry crossing to the roads of Spain and the first glimpse of Africa, every moment has been a step closer to the heart of the desert.
For anyone considering motorcycle touring in Morocco, these early stages highlight the importance of preparation and flexibility. Weather can change quickly, and the terrain demands respect. But the rewards are immense: stunning landscapes, thrilling roads, and the chance to experience a unique part of the world on two wheels.
As the journey continues deeper into Morocco’s desert, the challenges will grow, but so will the sense of adventure. Stay tuned for the next update from the Morocco Desert Raid 25.
