Navigating down to the Sahara Desert

The journey from Portsmouth to the Sahara has been a week-long adventure filled with surprises, challenges, and unforgettable moments. Today marks Day 8 of the Morocco Desert Raid 25, and for three members of the team, it’s their first time in Morocco. The excitement is palpable as we continue southward, riding through the High Atlas and onto the vast plains that lead to the Sahara. This post shares the highlights of the day, including an inspiring encounter, the heat of the desert, and the unique culture of the region.

Meeting a True Adventurer on a Small Motorbike

After breakfast, the team met an older French lady who was riding a French plated 100cc step-through scooter. What made this encounter remarkable was not just the scooter’s modest size or its max speed of 50 mph, but the fact that she was traveling alone with only a small rucksack and a top box. She had ridden all the way from France on this tiny bike, with no fixed plan for where to stay that night. This was a pure example of living the YOLO spirit—taking on a big adventure with minimal gear and maximum courage.

Her journey reminded us that motorbike touring is not about the size or power of the bike but the freedom and determination to explore. Seeing her confidently navigate the roads of Morocco on such a small motorcycle was inspiring for everyone in the group.

Riding Through the High Atlas and Following the Ziz River

Continuing south, the route followed the Ziz River, winding through the High Atlas mountains before opening up onto the plains. The landscape changed dramatically as we descended, with rugged mountain passes giving way to wide, arid expanses. Temperatures soared to 37°C, which felt intense when riding a motorcycle fully geared up for safety.

Riding in such heat requires careful preparation:

  • Staying hydrated is essential

  • Taking breaks in shaded areas when possible

  • Wearing breathable, protective gear designed for hot climates

Despite the heat, the camaraderie among riders on the road was a highlight. We met several other motorbike enthusiasts along the way, exchanging tips on routes, road conditions, and must-see spots. This informal network of riders is invaluable for anyone touring Morocco by motorcycle, especially when deciding if a road is passable or if a detour is needed.

Experiencing the Sahara: Camel Ride and Berber Culture

Arriving at the edge of the Sahara, the team took a camel ride up the dunes to watch the sunset. The view was breathtaking, with the sun casting long shadows over the golden sand. Riding a motorbike through Morocco’s varied terrain is thrilling, but nothing compares to the peacefulness of a camel ride in the desert.

After the ride, we enjoyed a four-course meal under the stars, accompanied by local Berber musicians. Their music added an authentic touch to the evening, connecting us to the culture and history of the region.

A quick cultural note: the term "Berber" is commonly used by tourists and locals in the towns, but the people themselves prefer the name "Amazigh," which means "free people." The word "Berber" comes from the Roman term "Barbarians," which carried a negative connotation. In the remote mountains, the Amazigh identity is strong and preferred, but in tourist areas, "Berber" remains the easier term to use.
