Arriving in Morocco early in the morning brought a mix of excitement and unexpected twists. Our group landed at the port at 5 a.m., ready to collect boarding passes for a 7 a.m. departure. Instead, we were hurried onto a 5:30 a.m. ferry that wasn’t on the schedule. This surprise start set the tone for a day full of adventure, discovery, and the unique charm of northern Morocco.

Crossing into Morocco and First Impressions

After disembarking, we faced the usual border formalities. The customs officers were still waking up, and their sleepy demeanor made the process slow but oddly amusing. Sorting out insurance paperwork proved frustrating, just because everything needs to be done in triplicate. Yet, the highlight of this early encounter was meeting the toothless mobile data seller who roamed the port area. His persistence and colorful personality were a memorable introduction to the local hustle.

Once connected to the internet, we set off on the coastal route. The road hugged the Mediterranean, offering views of the fortified Spanish town of Ceuta. This small enclave felt like a slice of Europe nestled in Africa, with its mix of Spanish architecture and African surroundings. Riding past Ceuta, we headed south toward Tetouan, a city known for its Andalusian influence and vibrant markets.
