Arriving in Morocco early in the morning brought a mix of excitement and unexpected twists. Our group landed at the port at 5 a.m., ready to collect boarding passes for a 7 a.m. departure. Instead, we were hurried onto a 5:30 a.m. ferry that wasn’t on the schedule. This surprise start set the tone for a day full of adventure, discovery, and the unique charm of northern Morocco.

Crossing into Morocco and First Impressions

After disembarking, we faced the usual border formalities. The customs officers were still waking up, and their sleepy demeanor made the process slow but oddly amusing. Sorting out insurance paperwork proved frustrating, just because everything needs to be done in triplicate. Yet, the highlight of this early encounter was meeting the toothless mobile data seller who roamed the port area. His persistence and colorful personality were a memorable introduction to the local hustle.

Once connected to the internet, we set off on the coastal route. The road hugged the Mediterranean, offering views of the fortified Spanish town of Ceuta. This small enclave felt like a slice of Europe nestled in Africa, with its mix of Spanish architecture and African surroundings. Riding past Ceuta, we headed south toward Tetouan, a city known for its Andalusian influence and vibrant markets.

Journey Through the Rif Mountains

Leaving Tetouan, the landscape changed dramatically. The Rif mountains rose sharply, their rugged peaks and green valleys creating a stunning backdrop. The winding roads through these mountains are a favorite for motorcycle touring enthusiasts. The curves and elevation changes provide a thrilling ride, with every turn revealing new vistas.

Traveling by motorbike through this region offers a unique way to experience Morocco’s diverse geography. The fresh mountain air and the sound of engines echoing through the valleys make for an unforgettable journey. The Rif mountains also hold cultural significance, with Berber villages dotting the landscape and offering glimpses into traditional Moroccan life.

Arrival in Chefchaouen: The Blue City

Our destination for the day was Chefchaouen, famously known as the Blue City. The town’s buildings are painted in various shades of blue, creating a calming and almost surreal atmosphere. The origin of this blue paint is debated, but many say it symbolizes the sky and heaven, or serves to repel mosquitoes. But it was introduced by the Jewish who fled Europe during the Spanish Inquisition.

The first stop was an unusual one: the main roundabout in the centre of town. Here, we paused for a photo. One of our team members nearly got run over by a police car while trying to frame the perfect shot, adding a bit of humor to the day. The roundabout is a great spot to capture the essence of Chefchaouen’s blue walls against the backdrop of the Rif mountains.

Exploring the Streets and Tastes of Chefchaouen

Walking through Chefchaouen’s narrow streets is like stepping into a different world. The blue walls contrast with colorful doors, flower pots, and local crafts displayed in small shops. The town is less crowded than Morocco’s larger cities, making it ideal for a relaxed exploration.

One highlight was stopping at Café Clock Restaurant, a popular spot known for its fusion of Moroccan and international cuisine. Here, we tried a camel burger, a local specialty that surprised many with its rich flavor and tender texture. The café’s atmosphere, with its blend of traditional decor and modern touches, made it a perfect place to rest and refuel.

Why Chefchaouen is a Must-Visit for Motorcycle Touring in Morocco

Chefchaouen offers more than just stunning visuals. For those interested in motorcycle touring, the town and its surroundings provide excellent routes. The roads through the Rif mountains are challenging yet rewarding, with plenty of opportunities to stop and enjoy the scenery.

The town’s relaxed vibe contrasts with the adrenaline of riding through Africa’s diverse landscapes. It’s a place to slow down, connect with local culture, and enjoy authentic Moroccan hospitality. Whether you’re traveling solo or with a group, Chefchaouen adds a unique chapter to any Morocco adventure.
