Day 1 Folkstone to Luneville

Traveling through France by motorcycle offers a unique blend of adventure, culture, and history. On this journey from Folkestone to Luneville, the experience combines the thrill of the open road with the charm of a medieval town rarely explored by many travelers. This post shares the highlights of a day spent crossing northern France, discovering hidden gems, and soaking in the atmosphere of Luneville, a town rich in history and character.

Setting Off from Folkestone

The day began early at the Folkestone services, ready to catch the Channel Tunnel. The check-in process was surprisingly quick and smooth, with only half a carriage filled with motorcycles. This efficient start set the tone for a long day of travel ahead.

The plan was to cover a significant distance southward, making use of the fast toll motorway. The route took us through Reims, with a toll fee of €16, and the goal was to cover what would normally be a day and a half of travel in just one day. This meant long stretches on the motorway, but the promise of new sights kept the spirits high.

The Long Ride Through Northern France

After three to four hours of steady motorway riding, hunger began to set in. A welcome break came at Bar-le-Duc, a town known for its excellent boulangeries. Fortunately, the bakery was open, allowing for a quick stop to refuel with fresh pastries and coffee. This pause was a perfect reminder of the simple pleasures of French travel.

The next leg of the journey aimed for a more scenic, twisty route heading east. Unfortunately, this part of France is mostly flat with straight, tree-lined roads. While the roads lacked dramatic curves, the shade provided by the trees was a blessing on a day when temperatures soared above 32°C. The cool shade made the ride more comfortable and offered a chance to appreciate the quiet beauty of the countryside.

Arrival in Luneville

Bypassing the city of Nancy, the destination of the day came into view: Luneville. This medieval town is often overlooked by travelers rushing through the region, but it holds a remarkable treasure in its center—a grand château.

The Château de Luneville stands as a magnificent example of baroque architecture. Once a favorite hunting lodge of King Stanislaus I of Poland in the 1700s, the château is open to the public and free to explore. Walking through its halls and gardens offers a glimpse into the opulence of the past and the lifestyle of European nobility.

A Unique Evening Experience

The evening brought an unexpected cultural moment. Paris Saint-Germain was playing Arsenal in the Champions League finals, but the town showed little sign of the football fever that might be expected. Instead, five British travelers gathered on a bar terrace, watching the match on a small iPad.

This small group quickly attracted the attention of locals, who joined in to watch the game. The friendly atmosphere created a memorable experience, blending international sport with local hospitality. It was a reminder that travel often brings people together in the most unexpected ways.

Dinner and Rest in Luneville

After the excitement of the match, dinner was a relaxed affair featuring local roast pork. The meal was hearty and satisfying, showcasing the region’s culinary traditions. With the day’s long journey behind us, an early night was welcomed to prepare for the adventures ahead.
